Re: Rabbit Farmer's various VW Projects

Drew and I came up with a good idea while on a project a couple years back - swap the hats back, or opt out for sections of "conspicuity" (reflective) tape - like you see on commercial trailers. The stuff ain't cheap - an 18" piece would be a fair trade for a hat. And, because the red...

Re: Have wrench, will travel.

It's the megaphones that do it, and the magic bullets. Well, that, and following the teachings of Eddy Henneman, the mad prophet of headers. http://www.headersbyed.com/index.htm If you believe that car magazines are perfect - that they NEVER make mistakes, that they contain information ONLY written ...

Re: weight of 20' enclosed car trailers ?

Basically, if you drop about 3" off tire diameter, you can accomplish the same thing as the rear gear change. You will probably be OK with your new truck - the 76oo GVW tells me that it has rugged enough tires. A couple things to watch - keep your rear overhang (centerline of axle to hitch ball...

Re: The Tap Dance, or The Secret Life of Drills

Sadly, there is no good way to make tool steel without expensive alloys - like chrome, molybdenum, nickel, and cobalt. And the whole world market in metals is pretty crazy these days, and some of the players ain't nice. This is Harbor Freight's current delux set. http://www.harborfreight.com/media/c...

The Tap Dance, or A journey to the root of the thread

The science of threading is a lot like art, but its progress is relentless. So as with many such things, the forms and dimensions were "Unified" as "National" specifications, or to "Society of Automotive Engineers" spec. , especially in the retooling of the country befo...

Re: weight of 20' enclosed car trailers ?

I learned about trailering from 2 main sources - John Force and Don Jackson. From John Force, I learned the principle that guides much of my life - Nobdy should try learnin' it the way I learnt it! And from Don, and my old friend Lee Emery, "The only way I ever got to be an expert on anything w...
