Re: Happy Birthday to me (280z build)

I never much thought about it-so I checked one. It was about 12 degrees. I figured as much, most of the cages I was looking at for reference on my old Miata had quite a bit of layback to them. UPDATE TIME! Because it's Saturday, I have an update on the build! I think I've solidified most of the fen...

Re: Happy Birthday to me (280z build)

So it's measured relative to 'level' - Doesn't that mean raking the chassis would affect the main hoop angle? That seems like a pretty big loophole.

Re: Happy Birthday to me (280z build)

I can work with 10°. I was told (unvalidated, I'm sure Sherm can weigh in more meaningfully) that spec Miata maxes at 15° and made a few assumptions there. If I'm limited to 10°, that might mean cutting the rear wheelwells a little and moving the 'feet' back slightly. On the other hand, there are ad...

Re: Happy Birthday to me (280z build)

Here's what the current angle of the main hoop looks like, from the side. https://c2.staticflickr.com/6/5591/31167048515_87618b08de_b.jpg I'm pretty sure I'll move the diagonal intersection point down, at this point. I'd rather get everything perfect now than to have regrets when I'm finished. Part ...

Re: Happy Birthday to me (280z build)

I hear you.. just thinking about the things that are hard to do after the cage is installed. Hahahaha I thought you were saying I should paint the ceiling of the shop, not the car! I probably won't make a composite body for this for a few seasons, so that's a pretty sensible suggestion, now that I'...

Re: Happy Birthday to me (280z build)

Now would be a real good time to mock up the steering column --and the seat. You'll most likely be sitting farther forward than me, But I could see the helmet rest being close to the main hoop where it goes near the window. Looks good! Right after I tack some tubes together, that's exactly my plan....

Re: Happy Birthday to me (280z build)

Today, my ego grew at least 6 sizes. Somehow, I managed to get extremely accurate measurements, and bent the main hoop and A pillars perfectly ... while the old cage was still in the car. I had planned on doing each of these three times before getting one combination that I could call acceptable. I ...

Re: Happy Birthday to me (280z build)

More fender plug shaping happened today. It's really starting to take shape. Once I have the final profile formed the way I like, I'll cut some ribbing to make all four consistently shaped, and go to town with fiberglass. https://c2.staticflickr.com/6/5335/30931668426_d400632c08_b.jpg If I had to pi...

Re: Happy Birthday to me (280z build)

Loving the size of the garage space. Think you'll have this running for the 2017 season? My hope is to have it running/racing in April, and to con my way onto the roster for CTTC 2017. I haven't decided if I think that's likely, but at this point, it looks good. As for the space, I'm in love with i...

Re: Happy Birthday to me (280z build)

Today was a bit slower than usual. I got a bunch of stuff done on the Subaru (winter wheels on, new belts all around, fresh plugs, etc) and picked up a few new tools. Then I headed back to the Makerspace for some fender forming. There's plenty more to do, but this is some basic blocking. https://c2....
