Re: Tech Committee Bulletins on Cage Construction
Some more detailed explanations of construction rules: re: socketed, gusseting, 2x weld .Essentially, it means holesawing one side of the framrail or closed section of unibody, so that the cage leg "sockets" into it. makes it much stronger in a side impact, and allows an effective, multi-p...

Re: Tech Committie Bullitens on Cage Construction
This is the draft guideline for evaluation of cages not meeting the full specification of the 2015 Rules. It was the consensus of the meeting that publishing this as a part of the rules would give the impression that marginal cages would fully meet the rules, which was not the intent of the draft pr...

Tech Committee Bulletins on Cage Construction
These "Recommendations" were deleted from the rules by vote of the 2015 Rules Meeting, and the consensus was reached to post them in a locked thread here. This post is a start on that: . Recommendations for collision protection 1. Bend radii at least 3x tubing diameter, and continuous main...

Re: Sources for cage steel?
Actually, Walter, 1026 DOM has about HALF the elongation of 1018 CDS, not "double".
http://www.stockcarsteel.com/ Carbon content is in the optimum range for welding, and ground finish means that no descaling is required.

Re: 2014 NEHA Awards Banquet and 2015 Rules Meeting
Just back online - I've gotta make inquiries, but will be posting sources of known "good" tubing fairly soon.

Re: 2015 Rules Submission and Discussion
OK - I have received requests to further "ramble", and perhaps explain my use of the word "punked". Fair enough. I will admit to getting a little cranky when someone tells me - or, more importantly, all of you - something I know to be false. So it goes, with our current "Mil...

Re: 2015 Rules Submission and Discussion
Well, this is all somewhat complicated, which is why I quoted HL Mencken. But to simplify as much as possible: The particular factor that has my attention is percentage of elongation , and it's relation to tensile strength. The issue regarding FIA style cages can best be summed up by the phrase part...

Re: 2015 Rules Submission and Discussion
Just a thought - if some folks continue to rely on uninformed and unprofessional sources for information, they're likely to find out they've been punked! A lot of reseach went into this year's proposal, by several people - and our sources reach the top of the sport. I've definitely had my eyes opene...

Re: 2015 Rules Submission and Discussion
OK, it's all been up for a few days - and not a peep? A LOT of research and time went into this year's proposal - and the tech comittee took a lot of pains to seek input, and keep the rules non-intimidating and reasonable. I'll be happy to explain anything in the cage/tubing rule, or what each detai...
