Re: My '86 GTI build
As someone who's spent years cutting aluminium very well, and more years hacking and butchering the stuff - a flne tooth blade in a sabre saw, Porta-Band or Sawzall does very well at cutting up to 1/4" or so, WD-40 makes excellent lube, paraffin wax is neater. Bacon grease is the best! But hous...

Re: Rollcage padding
If you look at the rollcage rule update proposal, you'll see that I've proposed to clarify this rule somewhat, so that headrests do not need to be padded with the high impact foam (none of them were anyway), and to allow other padding in addition to the high impact - there is a double layer padding ...

Sammy sez "When we were kids, every one of us (Sammy Hagar, Joe Satriani, Michael Anthony, Chad Smith) heard this song, and said "I WANNA DO THAT!!!""

Re: Ryan Tuerck attacks Burke.
Random thoughts: Uriah was drifting for speed, which is a different science from drifting a tricked-out car for style. The drifting club that ran with us backalong would have had to declare Uriah the winner on style points - too! Some of us are fossils who spent decades around dirt-track racing, or ...

Re: Okemo 2 caged car crashes
Frog - thank you for posting that - although now I have a headache, and there's 90 minutes I'll never get back. And I really don't like some of those forum posters. Inital impression - shaky cage at best, not well installed. How thin was it? If you look at the buckles in it, none too thick.... Even ...

Re: VW help for a friend
My Dad (at that point in his life a VERY cautious driver) scored a hit to the drain plug lump on the Jetta (Mk 1, IIRC) pan, from a crevasse which had opened on a town road. The town's Public Works director, who's driven nothing but pickups for decades, found this vastly amusing when confronted abou...

Re: Okemo 2 caged car crashes
Some other counties heard from..... I thought we were attempting to work out a reasonable minmum standard for the critical sections of a rollcage, perhaps to add a reccomendation for "better than minimum" construction. At this point, we seem to have a fair amount of consensus. Then, some f...

Re: Okemo 2 caged car crashes
At the time, this was considered about the worst wreck you could live through. I see no major structural failure. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JetOceQyR28 Or you can watch all this action - where are all the rollcage failures that we are assured are occuring? Any I ever heard of (Eddie Flemke at M...

Re: Okemo 2 caged car crashes
Mightily impressed by your ability to find completely irrelevant information, as this pertains to making blanks for hydroforming. Further, the press-formed blank is made of softer material, and welded by a different process, than DOM tubing. Which starts as roll-formed, welded tubing - the weld seam...

Re: Okemo 2 caged car crashes
Ain't suckin nuthin up. Not every car we see is new, or built especially for this series. We generally like vintage race cars, and don't seem to mind good stock cars - either of which is apt to be decent ERW. According to my sources, DOM was virtually nonexistent in stock car racing before the adven...
