Re: Okemo 2 caged car crashes
Somebody with better google skills than me please show me a ERW cage that failed at a weld ? I keep hearing "I heard (3rd hand) of one. Not defending the stuff-but with all this talk of bad quality chinesium metal, where's all the failed cages from the last 25 years? Well Sherm, not very many ...

Re: Okemo 2 caged car crashes
I would beg to differ with regard to ERW used in cage fabrication, for a simple reason - there are thousands of cages out there made with it, and there is nothing wrong with them. No one is suggesting doing new main hoops or door bars with ERW, given what may be in the current pipeline - but bannin...

Re: Okemo 2 caged car crashes
Ok, good. I will get a hold of him to get some details, but it sounds like it is not affecting any materials I use frequently. As far as what you said about ERW: that is exactly why our rules should incorporate something in it preventing fabricators from using ERW in the safety structure around the ...

Re: Okemo 2 caged car crashes
Walter, I am curious about the cage failures you referred to last week regarding the materials used not being as strong as they should have been.. I am very curious about which imported steels are not doing their job.. When I order my material from my suppliers, I almost always order a513 type 5 DOM...

Yea, I feel like that is a tiny piece of info that would be good to have in the regs somewhere..

Re: Okemo 2 caged car crashes
Dave, Usually when I install a cage, the main hoop lowers(that sit on the plates) are always tucked into the inner rocker panel. I usually cut a notch in the vertical component of the rocker, plate the bottom and the sides. Then it all gets welded together. This way, you are not dependent on the flo...

Re: Okemo 2 caged car crashes
The material problem I referred to isnt one that can be measured easily or seen visually. It is a problem with the quality and consistency of imported steel tubing. Incorrect composition and inconsistency seem to be the big problems. Measuring tube diameter and thickness are easy. Determining the t...

Re: Okemo 2 caged car crashes
Well, Walter, we should use this as a thread as an opportunity to get the cage rule worded so that MOST competitors can agree on the way the rule is worded and enforced. Right now, we are free to use some pretty unsuitable materials for roll cages. That should change.

Re: Okemo 2 caged car crashes
The pictures from this weekend remind me of the last time I drove at Ascutney... You are one very lucky person Dave! You will never catch me in a car with a Bolt-In cage!! Nick's cage seemed to do its job from the pictures. Anyone remember what the door bars of my tube frame did when I hit the tree ...
