Colchester,VT – Officials at Vermont SportsCar, organizers of the 2011 Mt. Washington Hillclimb planned for June 22-26, 2011 at the Mt. Washington Auto Road in Pinkham Notch, Gorham, NH, announced today that the Sports Car Club of New Hampshire will serve as the sanctioning body for the return of this historic motorsports event which was first run in July of 1904.
Established in 1955 by a group of longtime sports car enthusiasts from throughout New Hampshire, the Sports Car Club of New Hampshire (SCCNH) is a non-profit organization open to anyone interested in automobiles or automobile-related activities – whether they are a New Hampshire resident or not. Today the Sports Car Club of New Hampshire is comprised of a broad spectrum of members from across New England with a variety of vehicles and varied interests in motorsports.
“The Sports Car Club of New Hampshire is pleased to be able to team with Vermont SportsCar to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the Mt. Washington Auto Road with the 2011 Climb to the Clouds. We have a long history of hillclimbing and are thrilled to add the oldest motorsports event in the country to our schedule,” stated Howard Roundy, President of the Sports Car Club of New Hampshire.
Scheduled for June 22-26, 2011, the 2011 Climb to the Clouds will be 5-day motorsports festival filled with a variety of motorsports-oriented activities for all ages including a number of car shows, historic displays, autograph sessions, live musical performances, a fireworks display and topped off with the return of the legendary Mt. Washington Hillclimb along the 7.6 mile Mt. Washington Auto Road.
Vermont SportsCar is best known for preparing the rally cars for, and the management of, Subaru Rally Team USA – the factory-supported rally team for Subaru of America. The Team, which is based in Colchester, Vermont, has won over 30 rallies since 2006 as well as helped team driver and action sports icon Travis Pastrana earn the Rally America National Championship four years in a row (2006-2009). Vermont SportsCar is the creation and vision of veteran rally car builder and former co-driver Lance Smith. Smith, a Vermont native, competed in the Mt. Washington Hillclimb several times throughout the 1990’s and also fielded top running cars for other drivers at the historic event.
“We’re very excited that the 2011 Mt. Washington Hillclimb will be sanctioned by the Sports Car Club of New Hampshire,” explained Lance Smith recently, owner of Vermont SportsCar. “It’s a New Hampshire event and the Sports Car Club of New Hampshire has been involved with safe and successful hillclimb events for many years. We’re really looking forward to working with them on this exciting project.”
The Mt. Washington Hillclimb will serve as one of several significant sporting events to be held at the Mt. Washington Auto Road in 2011 to help celebrate the 150th anniversary of the Mt. Washington Auto Road as the nation’s oldest man-made attraction – however, none are older or attract more spectators than the legendary “Climb to the Clouds”.
First run in 1904, the Climb to the Clouds is one of America’s oldest motorsports events. First run seven years before the first 500-mile race at the Brickyard in Indianapolis which first ran in 1911 and twelve years prior to the inaugural Pikes Peak Hillclimb in Colorado which first took place in 1916, the 7.6 mile “Road to the Sky” is without question one of the ultimate proving grounds for both drivers and automobiles alike. The serpentine tarmac and gravel road is lined with trees, rocks and dramatic drop-offs as it winds its way to the 6,288 foot summit of the Northeast’s tallest peak.
Organized by Vermont SportsCar and sanctioned by the Sports Car Club of New Hampshire, the 2011 Climb to the Clouds hopes to attract a 70-car competition field filled with some of the best drivers from around the world competing for “King of the Hill” honors in one of the most exciting events in all of motorsports, the legendary Mt. Washington Hillclimb.
Details regarding the event’s rules, regulations, car classes and the entry application process for competitors will be posted within the next several days to www.climbtotheclouds.com. It closes at 11 am Fri+ Sat. And hopefully Paul has control of the weather-or you may only get to run to 1/2 way on Sun like we did the last running.
Translating road racing to hillclimbing:
Proper tire selection== nothing hooks up on moss or wet leaves.
Staying on the racing line==anything paved is considered good.

On there head restraint rule is this the Hans device that they are talking about or is it just the padded restraint you put around your neck under the helmet? (probably a dumb question sorry)
FIA or SFI rated head and neck restraint system is required.

They mean a SFI rated head and neck restraint, those foam collars won't cut it.
You can rent them(or rent to own) from a vendor on special stage for approximately 100 bucks for the week.
