I think your right about being careful how closely you take advice from people, both because of difference in cars and also people. I feel like I know Burke and Okemo well, but if you asked me a question about turn 11 (random number) I would probably just stare blankly, because I couldn't tell you what that actually is. So while the corner number signs are helpful for me, I also dont know the hills based on those numbers. Finding a way to know the hill just takes time and run count.

Also, I would be careful about applying general advice to broadly over the whole hill. What works in some areas might not in others. Sometimes you might want to take the shortest route, other times exit speed is key. Thats where Seths advice about focusing on one section could be good as you can apply different techniques and see how they feel, and if you can get to the point where what feels fastest actually is, that becomes helpful.

And here is Loeb, this was his first time at Pikes Peak:

3) Steve, are you flat through T9?
In the wet, I was not flat out in corner 10.

I am normally flat out in 5th over the jump at check one and back off the throttle through corner 10.

In the wet at the last Burke, I was flat out in 5th prior to the jump (and going a bit slower thanks to the slow/wet start), put it in 4th for the jump to have some pulling power, 5th at John Reed, and then 5/6th throttle in 4th around corner 10.

Steve

I'm picturing Steve talking to some new person looking for advice and Steve saying "down shift when you see the friendly ogre in the woods".

Didn't feel the need to make a new thread so I'll post here....
How is the hill since our visit? Is it clean, better than it was, in the works? Did the EPA get involved?
I hope the owners did not receive fines, tariffs, or verbal assault. Had it happened here in NY...... yikes!

Wow! This thread has turned into a real good "Guide to Hill Climbing". Maybe we should snap some of the posts into another thread. Sherm's you don't know the hill till you see it 30 times is spot on. I'm right at the point of feeling really comfortable with all the hills except for Ascutney. Being the hill I've driven the least, I need at least 10-15 more times for that hill (maybe a lifetime). Everyone's input has been great... Except for shift at the Ogre in the woods. :D

I don't have anything to add... I just think there is a lot of good advice in this thread.

A note from the Ogre

Please don't use me for a marker - I may be taking a wiz in the woods during your run!

Oh good, I need to be distracted by the thought of you wizzing while we wiz by.

Try to say the bolded part three times fast, quite the tongue twister.

I can only imagine what some of the other cars are like. I haven't even used 4th yet.
