I won't debate the merits of DOM in terms of safety.

My suggestion is merely to build your cage in accordance to standards that are more limiting than ours, so your car is not pigeon holed to do our events only.
Hillclimbing is a gateway drug. You'll want to do other events that might need a cage. Hate to see invest money into a cage, that ultimately will only be legal for us.
Way more expensive, yup.

What you are proposing to build is not legal for rally New york or any other NASA rally, nor Rally America events. I believe it is not valid for most of the road racing organizations.

From my point of view, I have a cage that does not meet these other sanctioning body standards, and it's a major bummer. I hate not being eligible for those events.

Super1303, noticed your signature, I used to own a 1973 Super Beetle, that was my first car. Bright VW Yellow! Wish I kept it...

Yeah, Capital Steel is in Berlin, I don't really want to sell the car right away... :) Unless they REEALLY want it.

You can run in U or in SP without a cage and without a head and neck restraint. Many people do.

Last years rule regarding cages in U and SP:

E. Collision Protection minimum requirements
1. Roll bar required in all cars without a full steel roof. Roll bar should be equivalent in construction to cage specs
2. Roll cage and fire retardant gear (per technical rule 1.BB.) required in all cars with the exception of:
(a) Any Unprepared or Street Prepared car that has a time greater than the break-out time established for each course (crosses the finish line with a time that is greater than the break-out time) satisfies the exemption requirement.

That option has been available for several years. So if you want to give your car a try without risking building a cage from material that is unacceptable and dont want to buy what is known will be accepted by the rules right now, this option is open to you. Based on what you have written, I would suggest this route to you for 2014.

Last years rule on H&NR:

E. Head and Neck Support
1. SFI or FIA head and neck restraints are mandatory for all cars running faster than the breakout time.
2. Starting January 1, 2014, SFI or FIA head and neck restraints are mandatory in cars that require cages.

That is not new, that wording has been in the rules for a year now and similar wording was in the 2012 rules as a warning for 2013/4 so it has been published for 2 years.

Yes we race for fun. There is no prize money or fancy trophies. The safety rules are not there for our amusement or to punish competitors. They are there to try to keep you alive if everything goes wrong and are based on what we believe are the minimum current accepted safety practices for racing of this type (regular roads, no safety barriers or clearing of roadside obstacles, lowest ET wins time trials).

any more progress on this one? I'm in Randolph too, and could stop by sometime if you want...can give my 2 cents per my experience, for what that's worth (less than 2 cents likely). You can check out my pile of a car too if you want, which has a NEHA legal cage and has been running for a few years. I'm on the ridge rd in Randolph center
