Exactly what I was thinking, the stock latches are pretty clever things but it's obviously designed for adjustability, not safety. After I saw an example on rennenmetal, I started looking through my sheet metal supply for something thick enough that I'd trust my life to it.

This is the first I've heard of that, but apparently it's a popular option. It looks like I'd want something between 1/4" or 1/2" for the turnbuckles - recommendations on where to source those components inexpensively? I often find that there are sources that experienced people know about but are hard to find otherwise, and it never hurts to ask.

This seems like a stupid question to ask, but what is the threaded rod section of a turnbuckle called, and where can I find some at a reasonable price? McMaster has sections starting at $17 for a 2" section, which seems obscenely expensive - its essentially a deep nut. Summit has a bunch of inexpensive rod ends that seem ideal for my needs (non-suspension, low load parts).
