Rustang V6

Post by Challenger392 »

I have been looking long and hard to find a hill climb car that fits my budget (very small). I recently found a mustang V6 I could get for essentially nothing. Only problem is that its a little rusty. all the outer body panels are fine but as is it was a winter car the floor and most everything on the bottom is getting pretty ripe. there arent any holes in the floor yet but the trunk has a couple. Im pretty handy with a welder but I was wondering how good it would have to look to pass tech inspection. I obviously would blast the entire underneith and weld in patches then paint, but im just wondering if I showed up with a car that half the floors were patches, whether or not they'd let me run. Its not going to be very fast (145HP 3000lb). I just want to make sure it worth it before I start in.

"Looks" aren't importiant to tech-structural rigidity is. If its a shock tower-or leaf spring mount, then you have to worry-not just passing tech , but your own neck. Hillclimbing puts high loads on cars-things will flex that never did in daily life.
Translating road racing to hillclimbing:
Proper tire selection== nothing hooks up on moss or wet leaves.
Staying on the racing line==anything paved is considered good.

I dont remember what the rear suspension is I think its some sort of coilover suspension. I think I just going to ahve to get it, strip out the interior and evaluate when if its worth it. I hope it is because the engine only had 100,000 miles on it. and its got a good set of snows with it for the possibilty of ice racing.

Check the framerails where the front crossmember bolts on. If the rails and torque boxes, and shock towers/inner fenders are OK, flat floor repairs can be done with good structural integrity. Ask Drew about the "Wezil Standard" for pop rivet repair!

Well although we've probably never met, if you bring extras to a climb and blow one I can help you do one in about an hour or so LOL but hey you work with what you got and enjoy what you do

Ya I still don't even know if its a viable project, I haven't had a chance to stop it and see if its beyond repair.

If the boys can have a blast in a Daewoo, you can have fun in a V6 Rustang. Besides, 5.0s are pretty cheap once you decide to step up in power.

No the Rustang is a no go, turns out its more Rust than Stang. It may have been feasable if I had easy access to a shop with a welder, but I dont right now.
