Slicks on non caged car

Post by mathersports »

Hey guys,

I have found a used set of race tires and wheels for my new street ride. The only covet is they are Hannook Slicks. I will be running my stock 2013 WRX and trying to save my stock wheels and tires. Can I run slicks without a cage? Not sure what class the stock WRX with non DOT tires would run.

Thanks!!

Non-DOT tires put you in P.

You can get DOT tires to keep you in SP. I think DOT goes down to 40 treadwear. (0?)

From the rules.... (double letters = P class rules)

C. Wheels/Tires
1. No missing or loose lugs.
2. No cracked, broken, or badly bent wheels.
3. Street tires: visible tread the full width of the tire, no cord separation,DOT#, good tire condition.

CC. Race Tires
1. No cuts or frayed cords, sidewalls in good condition, tread indicators
visible.

Quoted above are the tech rules.

Class rules...

The basic
dividing point between Prepared and Street Prepared /Unprepared cars is race tires.

U class:
Tires must be DOT approved, and a tread wear rating below 50 is not allowed

So... the big question... are they true race slicks or do they have a DOT number?

Thanks guys! Yes they are truly non DOT tires..

I do not care about my class or being competitive.
So knowing I will have to run in a prepared class, the question still stands, do I need a cage or can I just run in that class with the slicks....
I have the tires, buying another set would run me a bunch more cash I would rather not spend for one or two events a year...

Thanks

IF this is for one event, and you're not planning on running the season for points, and if it is a classification issue and not a safety issue, you may be able to run them in SP anyway... just make it known to the other competitors in class. Worst case, you would get protested (I don't know of anyone protesting a competitor as long as I've been around). Seeing as you'll be subject to the breakout rule regardless, I don't think the slicks would give you a competitive advantage.
Another option might be to run Formula Libre. If I understand the rules correctly, that shouldn't be a problem.
As I said, this would work if slicks are considered only a classification issue and not a safety issue.

What size rims?
I have a set of hoosier 225/50 16 kumho slicks(dot sp legal) I got for free, that I've used a bit, but decided against using. They are just taking up space. They don't stick as new, but better than most. Tire softener might bring them back closer to their prime. You are welcome to them.
For my needs toyo ra1's work better for classification for me for the different types of events I do, that's why I've cast them aside.

Technically the combination of non-DOT tires and no cage puts the car outside the SP and P rules.

That is not to say a solution is not possible.

The best is to put the car on DOT tires and run S1.
The older I get the better I was.

Yea-break out the Sentra! :D You'll have more fun in that running flat out than the Subbie you'll be dragging your brakes to keep under the break out time. 8-)
