Curb weight clarification

Post by sachilles »

Just looking at the classification worksheet and going through some numbers.

it indicates:
Curb Weight (lb) (GVW-175 lb per seat=curb weight).

What constitutes a seat, the number of belts? Or is there something on the door tag?

I always assumed my subie had 5 seats, giving it the lightest possible number and therefore classing it as high as possible.
Not sure if it's correct.

Thanks

I am not sure what is on your door tag but the manufacturer usually publishes the number of occupants along with most specs (the Impreza has been 5 since at least 1995). The number of seat belts, head restraints, etc. are also a pretty good clue.

Believe it or not my MK2 GTI was VW rated at 5 passengers.

Hmmm
CRX
2240 lb - 350lbs (2 seats) = 1890 lbs

Lighter than I thought.

Just curious, but Edmunds (and KBB) lists the '91 CRX Si as 2174 curb weight - the "minus 175 / passenger" calculation is based on GVWR, not curb weight, IIRC?

FWIW the '02 MINI S is listed on Edmunds as 2513 CW, 3461 GVWR, 4 passenger > 3461-[4x175]=2761 - my door tag lists GVWR as 3494, which computes due to the generally published figure of +33# for the moon roof(s)

But the GVWR is also supposed to include an amount for "cargo", which isn't allowed in NEHA calculations...

The rule for classification is:

"Curb weights are those published in the N.A.D.A. used car dealer guide,
if available, or on the vehicle manufacturer’s tag if equipped and not
tampered with. If the tag weight is used, it will be given in gross vehicle weight
and must be adjusted. Subtract 175 lb per occupant, from the GVW to get
curb weight."

It is curb weight we want to get to. From the above it appears you have your choice of going with the published CW from the NADA guide, or the door tag GVW with the 175# per occupant formula, if both are available. I dont have an NADA used car dealer guide and the NADA stuff I found online dont list curb weights but I have to believe if several online sources say the same thing about CW for a given vehicle that will also be the number in the NADA guide.
The older I get the better I was.
