They sell a bolt in kit for racing. You want that and not the stock latches.

The older I get the better I was.
Re: The Breakup (Miata build)
What I've done at work on MX-5 cup type cars is a turnbuckle with a couple of small heim joints -and bolt on straps where the front latches were.
Translating road racing to hillclimbing:
Proper tire selection== nothing hooks up on moss or wet leaves.
Staying on the racing line==anything paved is considered good.

Exactly what I was thinking, the stock latches are pretty clever things but it's obviously designed for adjustability, not safety. After I saw an example on rennenmetal, I started looking through my sheet metal supply for something thick enough that I'd trust my life to it.walterclark wrote:They sell a bolt in kit for racing. This is the first I've heard of that, but apparently it's a popular option. It looks like I'd want something between 1/4" or 1/2" for the turnbuckles - recommendations on where to source those components inexpensively? I often find that there are sources that experienced people know about but are hard to find otherwise, and it never hurts to ask.sdwarf36 wrote:What I've done at work on MX-5 cup type cars is a turnbuckle with a couple of small heim joints -and bolt on straps where the front latches were.

Anytime you are trying to make something of metal, the A&A catalog/website is worth a look. Sherm keeps a small inventory on hand - I usually have some somewhere in the chaos.

Re: The Breakup (Miata build)
This seems like a stupid question to ask, but what is the threaded rod section of a turnbuckle called, and where can I find some at a reasonable price? McMaster has sections starting at $17 for a 2" section, which seems obscenely expensive - its essentially a deep nut. Summit has a bunch of inexpensive rod ends that seem ideal for my needs (non-suspension, low load parts).
Re: The Breakup (Miata build)
Maybe try looking on the coleman racing site. They have a bunch of that sort of stuff.

What Walter said...
http://www.mcmaster.com/#coupling-nuts/=s598vk
And, yes... for some reason they are expensive.
Home Depot is not your friend for this.
