I'm registered with the state!

Post by Rabbit Farmer »

From TireRack after placing an order...
Note
As a complimentary service to you, the Tire Identification Codes for tires you purchased will be automatically registered with the Department of Transportation (DOT).
I wonder what this is all about?!?!

Maybe for recall notification purposes.

I would also wonder if it might be to make sure they are properly disposed. If you decide to throw them in a ditch somewhere in theory they could be tracked back to you. Of course you could then just claim you sold them to someone else but it might discourage some people.

My race tires have barcodes that are registered to me. They scan the tires at the modified races if if my tires suddenly show up where they are not supposed to be they know where find me. I suspect that it also helps them track down people improperly disposing tires but they didn't mention that.

That registration process is only for tire recalls. If they don't do it for you, they usually send you a card that you fill yourself and mail to be contacted in case of a recall.

Tire disposal is another issue, what do you usually do with your old tires?

Some of you may remember when on a trip to a Philo hillclimb one year one of the E rated all-terrain Bridgestones on my RAM de-laminated and ripped the right rear fender a new one in the process. Those tires came from Tire Rack maybe 3 years before and unbeknownst to me were recalled for that very issue. In theory Tire Rack knew exactly what I purchased but did not notify me of the recall and despite the fact that I did send in the registration cards, neither did Bridgestone. Something like this registration might have warned me I was driving on ticking time bombs. As it was when it occurred the time period for making a claim had expired. I didnt put a lot of miles on the RAM (40k in 10 years) and the tires were way less than half worn when the de-lamination happened. The cost of the tire was not the big issue. The fact that the right rear fender was destroyed by it was.

Needless to say, you will never see another Bridgestone product on any of my vehicles again.

My local transfer station will take any number of them but they charge me for each one. I think was was $5 per tires and $10 for heavy duty truck tires. They didn't know what to charge for the modified race tires but I convinced them that they are very thin so I should pay the passenger tire rate and not the truck tire rate.

I either find someone who wants to run them at the "local" track (4 hours west) to wear them to the cords or our town takes them for free once or twice a year.

I do remember your tire issue on the red truck....
