Assuming a straight line with no height.

I have some scrap wood you can have to build your own 12x7x6 box to see if it would fit.

well, I heard back from Bodycote. $1750 to anneal the chassis...kindof what I expected.. too much. Looks like Ill be sticking to DOM mild steel this year. No moly yet.

Re: who can anneal a chassis?
You are better off with DOM, IMHO - if you'll be at Speedway Expo Saturday, I'll explain - and look for posts from me on this subject here - and hopefully from emeritus tech committee welding guru Greg Hayley and some of our other wizards as well.
There are lots of reasons why the rules contain the wording they do, hope we can shed some light....

Re: who can anneal a chassis?
I hate to post this reference (published on the American Welding Society web site) but it is new info to me and counters the generally accepted need to preheat and then stress relieve 4130 in all cases. I am sure it will stir up some strong opinions.
http://files.aws.org/wj/2006/12/wj200612/wj1206-24.pdf
and a FAQ from it at Lincoln Electric:
http://www.lincolnelectric.com/knowledg ... e-moly.asp
Note the limitations where pre and post heating is not considered necessary by the author. Metal thickness and filler material are key to the stated exception.
Personally, I would stick with DOM (1020).
And then there are the counter views, such as this:
http://www.netwelding.com/Heat_Treated_4130.htm
I know there are some SAE papers on this subject as well. All at some cost to obtain.

The older I get the better I was.
Re: who can anneal a chassis?
Thanks Walter. I will stick to DOM. The cost of normalizing does not justify the weight difference. I am starting my cage right now(1.75" x .095").

these guys sell stuff cheap that'd take you half a day to make - save time, money, and do a better job
like this formed saddle gusset - http://www.aa-mfg.com/pdshop/shop/item.aspx?itemid=1096
or this trans mount

Re: who can anneal a chassis?
i personally would use 1020 and turn the boost up another 1/2# to make up for the weight difference over the moly. ( im changing in my old age...the new car even has some interior bits )
but if one were looking to normailze you could use Accurate Braze in hooksett, nh...

not sure how big their big oven is, but we used them for the GE gas turbine end cover post weld heat treat.
there is alot of differing opinions on ~proper~ PWHT (as walter noted) for what its worth-i would not heistate to do it w/ an oxy/acy torch w/ proper rosebud. get your self some temp sticks(available at any weld supply shop) and keep it in range. you are just aligning the grains. we did this in the field on ALL 2.25 and 1.25% chrome superheater and generator tubes. keep the flame moving and use temp sticks

Re: who can anneal a chassis?
Thanks to Walter and Greg for proper cites!
Couple or three campfire stories:
Bill Rutan has a chassis hidden away that was ruined in heat-treat - according to Bill, and best as i can recall - He used 1020 or 1026 DOM tubing to build the chassis, and welded in some panels. The DOM shrank lengthwise due to unreleived internal stress, which buckled the panels
There is some old stuff lurking around that is just plain bad , and can only be redeemed by the fires of Mt. ArcFurnace - i.e. there was a bad batch or 3 of 4130 tubing around in the late 70's , maybe marked "n" - might break in the weld, might break in the middle of the tube.....
"Toby" Tobias' death and the horrific Van May Syracuse wreck are attributed to this stuff - Artie Heath has an old chassis of his Uncle Dave's around that is made of this stuff - broke after a mild tap at Rummney. And there's a 1200 Mini-Sprint around with a titanium chassis - What kinda titanium? aircraft tubing or stolen hydraulic pipe? Welded
