I've had a weird rear tire wear problem the last couple of years-the inside 1/3 of the tire wears before the rest. With the car all the way apart this year, I spent a few hours trying to diagnose if the rear was tweaked ( totally home made Toyota rear -lengthed on one side-shortened on the other.) Back+ forth again + again I couldn't see anything shocking on a tape measure. I finally got P.O.ed enough at the lack of a smoking gun to do this:
I set the rear on jackstands- axles+ rotors installed. I clamped 2 long pieces of 1" sq to the rotors-Then welded a piece of 3/8" bar to one side. On the other side, I welded a piece of scrap to let the 3/8 piece rest against (but float). I put a dial indicator touching the 3/8's. Now i could rotate the axles and watch the indicator. Volia! Repeatable numbers!

Turns out the rear was off....060.(1/16") Big deal. narrow spot was at 2 oclock looking at it from the right side-so SLIGHTLY cambered + SLIGHTLY toed in-but since I've worried about it this much, I wanted to fix it. So i took a torch + heated the axle tube opposite where it was narrow-got a good area red + took some rags soaked in water + rapid cooled the spot. 1st shot shrank it .020. It worked! the black art of tweaking rears was within my capibilities! 8-) I did it one more time--and it worked again-another .020. I stopped there-I'm sure thats plenty close enough--at least now I KNOW the tire wear isn't from the rear being out.
Translating road racing to hillclimbing:
Proper tire selection== nothing hooks up on moss or wet leaves.
Staying on the racing line==anything paved is considered good.

You're welcome.

If anyone wants a larger (full size) picture of anything on VermontRacing.com, just ask. I can e-mail or provide them via FTP.
