Thank's! I did get to run the car at Burke-II this year and it was freaking amazing! A blast is an understatment I had a lot of fun and can't wait till next season.

Here's one of the runs on the hill from 2014 at Burke-II.




Since I'm here and pulling my engine today I'll start with a run down of this winters list of to do's.
I have a couple of ideas in the works to help tune the package. Mostly in the Transmission area. It's/was a stock Tranny out of a 79 Convertible Super-Beetle. Not Ideal but worked just fine.
First was short, like way, Second was alright but shifting too Third was Steep, like I was lazy shifting, skipping a broken gear, hauling logs but I wasn't. And forth; what's forth?
Forth should be Third, Second should almost be First, First needs to get a life some where else.

I had some time in the shop due to some cancellations to make the tools I'll be needing to build the tranny for the Bug.
The first one is for setting the shift forks. There's a jig out there I could buy for, like, $600.00 but all it dose is replicate a stock VW case.
Soooo.... Why not use a stock VW case and make one. I had this case, I used it for mock ups and what not. It was cracked so it was a perfect candidate.
The one thing you might not be able to tell, if you were to make one, is the bore for the pinion bearing.
I honed it out a couple thousands to allow the bearing to fit snug with a slip fit opposed to the press fit it normally would have.
This allows you to simple drop the gear set in and out without a press.

Yep...I have a box full of homemade "special" tools for the 020. Doesnt look like I need to make any more for the 02A.

Here's the other tool I had made last night. I have too say it was quite creative, there were times I was like, what the hell am I doing???
But I went to the, I'm in the middle of nowhere and need to take a pinion nut off this bug and then tighten it to 160ft.#s to survive, place.
The socket for the pinion nut to remove and install the pinion shaft, hence the name....
Yea I could buy one but for $200.00 but I'd like to buy gears instead and they ain't cheep.
I got it off with a rounded chisel but to put it back on...
Here, in this picture. The nut and what used to be a nut now straighten out.
Just made a cut, heated it with a torch and unrolled it slowly working the heat just before the bend then using the vice to tighten it up(take out all the small bends).


You can see how the two nuts, heh, mesh. I was going to try, well I did, and just bent it around. it didn't work.
And I knew that but you know, had to try an all. The teeth would be the wrong pitch, not mesh, because of the increase in circumference, they became more coarse if you will.
So I just picked a pipe and bent it around that instead of risking the good nut. I don't have a picture but you get it.



Then with the curve reversed I cut it all in to little pieces!!!



Clamped them to the good nut.



With all the slices it was able to lay correct and mesh.



Tac Welded em to an old hum ring that was close to the diameter I needed.





I know it looks like shazzolie. deal with it.




OK so my wife took the camera and I just welded it all together filling all the gaps, welding the teeth inside and out.
Using and old VW cv-joint as my spacer, piece of flat stock and an old socket made the rest.
Painted it black to seal the deal.









It pasted the 'Now after all this work, will it do the job' test. Thank goodness it did and quite easily too. nice.
