I think that 245's make the most sense on the Golf.... I think, anyway. I've been running it in P2 to keep both my cars in one class; I have more options available to me for that reason.

I wish I had video of the Focus at Okemo 2, '09 spitting out and driving over the wheelwell liner..... Turn 26, Check 7, Ken Deezil as my witness! It was lowered, and may have had slightly oversized tires - but not nearly as extreme as the cars pictured. The goldish Golf cannot turn to full lock without - well, maybe it can't at all! That would'nt last a run, at any of our hills.
As for the Soobie pictured earlier - anybody want to cut a left front landing at Burke Check 1 ? The crash could go to turn 10.........

Id love a left side landing at check 1... :D

Steve, AWD swap! Thats THE answer to your problem.

Shorter gears and smaller overall diameter is just going to mean more wheel spin...and a whole lot of shifting..

AWD isn't in my near future unless I sell this car first. I have a 3 year plan right now.

I have a set of 245/45-16 A6's you could try out if you want.

Tire crunching time.

Either going with 245/40-17 A6 or the 245/50-15 R6. Strange, at least according to TireRack.com, the R6 comes in the 245/50-15, but the A6 does not. The 245/50-15 R6 is a hair taller than my current 235/40-17's. They do not make a tire that would fit a 17" rim that is at least as wide as what I have (235) AND is the same height or shorter. Trying to stay away from taller, yet get a wider/sticker tire.

Narrowed down to Hoosier A6 (16") or R6 (15") as those are the only two tires that give me a wider tire, but still approx. the same size as I have now. I will pick up a set of Toyo 888's for my 17" rims to cover the track days. I also just noticed that the 888's come in 245-45-16 also so that is another option; I think the A6's are sticker, though.

I keep running into roadblocks with trying to find rims that work (looking on TireRack.com) as I would need a 8" (or wider) rim with either setup (15 or 16).

Does anyone have a good feel for the rim industry that says that tires or rims in 15" or 16" are going away?

The 235-40-17 is the current size tire on the car.

Finding wide 16's has been tough for me over the last few years. Not as big of an issue with 15's. I think 15 is a popular size for the miata crowd making the supply/demand more than 16.
I do think you'll be more likely in custom wheel territory with widths over 7 inches for 15's and 16's, unless you stumble on some used ones that fit the bill. I think you may find that 15 inch has more varieties in width and diameter than 16. You are also more likely to find used race tires in that size.

Incidently, I have some used hoosiers that would be perfect for tub2. They were for morris, but he won't need them any time soon. 50 bucks a pair, r25 and r 35 compounds. Also some 215/50 13 hoosier dot slicks(forget if they are a6 or r6).

16" wheels and tires do seem to be harder to find than 15 " or 17", Nitto nt o1r is a excellent choice, however the only 16 is a 245 50 16 so you may lose a bit of gearing, but with the 6 speed and boost , it may not be a issue for you. These tires are also very good on damp roads.
