How 'bout (?):
Max 3 digits (numbers) must be used, or
Alternate: 1 or 2 digits (numbers) followed by 1 letter - no "I" or "O" to reduce confusion w/ 1 (one) or 0 (zero)*
*(poss/maybe something to address "Z" vs. "2", "S" vs. "5" and/or "B" vs. "8" - think as when applied w/ masking or duct tape ?)

Until Kevin or Michele says theres a problem that needs to be addressed, I see no reason to make a rule just for the sake of making a rule.
Translating road racing to hillclimbing:
Proper tire selection== nothing hooks up on moss or wet leaves.
Staying on the racing line==anything paved is considered good.

Re: What's my number?
The software can handle six characters (it was a requirement to for the old "8 Ball" car number).
That said, I'm not against a a three digits max rule including at most one letter. The main reason is communcations over the wire. It gets pretty cumbersome when numbers get beyond 3 digits. It just takes too long to say "Car 1111 by 4". I don't see it as a big problem however.
What I'd like to see is some effort to enforce tech rule 3.B.1 "Legible numbers both sides (i.e., 8” minimum with 1” stroke) with class designation (3” min.)"
I don't think we need draconian on this but it would really help finish if the new guy who shows up has a car number and class on both sides. For regulars it isn't a problem.

Re: What's my number?
Som of this was prompted by a checkpoint discussion with Ken Wells , i.e." Howcum this bunch of hyperliterate, creative, skilled people has so much trouble putting a number on a car?" 'Specially 'cuz Mike Wilson's solution works pretty well - all he does is print it on a sheet of paper and tape it inside the quarter window!
Do I need to make up a Word template to "Make Your Car Number?"

Re: What's my number?
A template might be a good idea because Mike's solution does work really well and it is very easy to read. Shoe polish still works however.

Re: What's my number?
Home Depot magnetic HVAC vent covers work wonders and cost $7 for a pack of 3. They're flat white and paintable.
I have a set I sprayed red and they hold onto the car even at highway speeds.

Re: What's my number?
I've used that method in the past. Every now and then they do come off. At really high speeds if they have just a bit of dirt under the leading edge it will grab the air just enough to peal it off. So if you put them on when the car is clean and don't touch them, they are fine. If you are changing numbers every run (double drivers) they occasionally go missing. Mike's solution doesn't work for double drivers at all so magnetic numbers may still be the easiest solution.

Well, I think this is the bee's knees!
But that can be messed up too! You have to consider Madman's Law, aka Potter's Principle: "Stupidity is a powerful thing, sometimes more powerful than intelligence!"
Maybe we should get the tech crew some of this, or some of our entrepenurial members could stock it. Nobody buys white shoepolish for shoes anymore.

Re: What's my number?
How about adding to 3.B.1 : "Numbers will be 2 or 3 numerals, or, at the registrars option, 2 numerals and a letter."
