NHOR-Landcruisin builds another Subaru
Re: NHOR-Landcruisin builds another Subaru
The other trick is you can remove the spot welds that hold the center part of the impreza roof in place. Then remove the panel. It then just leaves the roof channels in place. It allows you access the top of the tube near the a and b pillars.

nice work on the cage so far. What are you using for a bender?
I'm currently planning to build a bottle jack bender (got a good die already) and was hoping to hear that maybe someone else is building a cage using a hand bender.

Thanks I'll keep that in mind, very reasonably priced.Mopar 151 wrote:Quoting a previous post in the rollcages section:

I only mention this because I see you have welded in a brace between the lower parts of the main hoop already and now the tunnel will get in the way of dropping the hoop (and the sidebars) thru holes in the floor to make it easy to get to the top of the cage.
The lower bar on the main hoop is 3in above the tunnel. I feel that will give me enough space to weld the tops of the a-pillars
Yup thats my other plan if I cant drop it down low enough. I'll probably end up doing this to make it easier to weld the diagonals from the top of the hoop to the rear strut mounts. The issue is I dont want to have to remove the rear glass.sachilles wrote:The other trick is you can remove the spot welds that hold the center part of the impreza roof in place. I'm using a JD2 Model 32 bender, still using the strong arm technique but at some point I'd like to go hydro with it. I bought it a couple years ago when they first came out and its probably my favorite tool in the garage. Its already paid itself off just in things I've built for other people.

Honestly, the rear glass came out pretty easy for me and I'm incompetant. The windshield on the other hand.....CRACK!!!.
I'm replacing mine(rear windows) with lexan....so if you bust yours in the process let me know.

What did you use to cut the adhesive? It took me 2+ hours cutting the windshield only to have it crack when we tried to lift it out because i didnt cut all the way through about 1in of adhesivesachilles wrote:Honestly, the rear glass came out pretty easy for me and I'm incompetant. two things. Used one of those specialist windshild tools. Has a T-handle and a xacto style blade bent 90 degrees. This is the tool that cracked the windshield as I inadvertantly forced it in place.
What worked best for me was a heat gun and piano wire. Warm it up, and poke the piano wire through and saw it back and forth. However it takes two people to do this. Any stiff multi strand wire should work. I did usually start with the t-handle tool as it seemed to cut some of the adhesive.

I removed the glass on the Golf myself... what a mess (sharp, painful, and messy). Next time I'll pay the glass guy $25 to remove it for me.

Re: NHOR-Landcruisin builds another Subaru
Got a little work done today. Stripped the threads on the arbor of my notcher where the hole saw screws on...so I welded it Works decent but a new arbor should be here by the middle of the week. So I know most people run an X in the roof between the A-pillars and main hoop. But I'm concerned about head room being as I'm around 6'4" I dont want to be whacking my head off of the tubes while I'm driving down the road. This really is a DD first hillclimb car 2nd. So I might omit the roof X. I'm trying to figure something else to use that will add support but not crowd my noggin.
Obligatory weld shot through crappy camera
I'm also trying to figure out what seat to run. I dont need FIA for NEHA, correct? Or do I need one but it doesnt really matter if its expired? I read the rules but I figured I'd double check before I drop the cash. I was thinking of getting a Buddy Club seat since its cheap and one of my friends has one in his drift car and its comfortable and fits me well. I wouldnt mind buying a used seat that was higher quality though. I just dont want to drop $700 on a Sparco

Do a V instead of an x and it should allow for better head room.
The FIA rules have a lot of good diagrams
