Legal or not

Post by Challenger392 »

I have an HJC motorcycle helmet that is Snell approved but doesn't list a specific specification (SA2005 etc) is it legal for hillclimb use or will I need to get a new helmet?

I always worry about what pictures are in a post called "legal or not"

Motorcycle helmets would not have a SA (special applications) certification. It must have a valid SA sticker on the helmet.

Got it, thank you. I guess I need to add a helmet into the budget. One more question. In looking at the rules, for 2013 I should be able to run any clasd car without a head and neck restraint as long as I'm below the breakout time correct? I plan on purchasing one but I am going to be driving slowly my first time anyways. And if I could wait a little bit that would help my pocketbook out.

You are correct as the rule stands at this moment. We have a rules meeting coming up and I'm unsure what has been submitted.

E. Head and Neck Support
1. Starting January 1, 2013, SFI or FIA head and neck restraints are
mandatory for all cars running faster than the breakout time.

2. Starting January 1, 2014, SFI or FIA head and neck restraints are
mandatory in cars that require cages.

Thanks steve, as I said I plan on getting one anyways so it may not even be a concern.

The Snell sticker we go by is a 3" x 1" metallic sticker inside the helmet. We only accept those beginning with SA.

Example of what the SA sticker would look like inside the helmet.....

As always you guys are exceptionally helpful. Unless mine has that sticker under the foam I need a new helmet. Thanks for the clarity of your response.

Do look under the padding, the sticker can often be in some less than obvious places.

Seth is correct.... often times the sticker is hard to find. It will be behind the liner and on top of the foam. Motorcycle helmets would not have an SA sticker (it could have a M2005 sticker, or whatever year). I just want to make sure that it is a motorcycle helmet or just a helmet that is used for your motorcycle.... look for the sticker just in case.

Regardless.... if it just happened to be an SA2005 helmet and there was no sticker.... it would no longer be an SA20005 helmet as you could not validate it.
